Guest Safety at our Holiday Cottages!

Did you know that there are lots of health & safety requirements for running any sort of guest accommodation? We've summarised just a few of them (relating to fire safety) below, to help you choose accommodation that's legally compliant and puts guest safety first...

  1. You must be able to easily get out of the property in case of emergencies - thumb turn locks are recommended for this, so you don't need to try and find a key to exit quickly.

  2. Properties should have mains wired, interconnected smoke detectors in every bedroom, living area and hallway, with a heat detector in the kitchen - these need testing every week.

  3. Carbon monoxide detectors are required in every room where there's a gas appliance (hob, gas fire, boiler etc.)

  4. Properties must have an annual Fire Assessment done by a competent person - these will advise on how to improve fire safety, including where fire doors are needed etc.

  5. Fire action notices must be displayed, alerting guests on what to do in case of fire

  6. On an annual basis, chimneys should be swept, fire extinguishers and alarm systems serviced, fire doors inspected and cooker extractors deep cleaned.

  7. Fixed wiring / electrics must be fully checked and certified every 5 years and electrical appliances checked regularly.

  8. Boilers should be serviced annually , with a Gas Safety Certificate needed each year.

This is by no means a full list but gives you an idea of some of the key things to look out for in terms of fire safety. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact PASC (The Professional Association of Self Caterers)

Have a happy and safe holiday!
